Biënnale X Roermond; gratis entree

In de voetsporen van Joep Nicolas Mariska Dirkx zet zich al vele jaren in voor het Roermondse culturele erfgoed van de glaskunst. Dertig jaar geleden wist bijna niemand meer welke belangrijke rol de glaskunstenaars van de stad Roermond speelden in binnen- en buitenland. Mariska Dirkx en Dick van Wijk, die sinds 1979 in het voormalig atelier van de familie Nicolas wonen en werken, zijn elke dag omringd door het rijke verleden. Sinds zij er wonen, komen er regelmatig bezoekers die over Joep Nicolas vertellen. Al meer dan 150 jaar is het atelier een ontmoetingscentrum waar kunstenaars elkaar vinden. Sinds 35 jaar werkt Dick van Wijk, beeldhouwer, in dit atelier en organiseert Mariska Dirkx vanuit haar galerie exposities en is zij de bindende factor voor de moderne glaskunstenaars. Het bleek dat Joep Nicolas vooral landelijk een grote bekendheid heeft en vele persoonlijke contacten had. Men had en heeft groot respect voor hem. Het is niet voor niets dat prinses Beatrix bereid was zijn tentoonstelling in het Cuypershuis te openen op 10 juni j.l. Mariska en Dick vonden het zeer jammer dat het culturele erfgoed van de glasschilderkunst ten gevolge van de groeiende ontkerkelijking verloren dreigde te gaan en met name Mariska nam in 1986 het initiatief om de glaskunst nieuw leven in te blazen door de eerste Joep Nicolas tentoonstelling te organiseren. Zij dook daarbij in de historie om zich te verdiepen in de geschiedenis van de glaskunstenaars van Roermond. De familie Nicolas speelde daarin de hoofdrol en met de jaren kwam Mariska steeds meer gegevens op het spoor over de familie zelf en haar kunstwerken. Mariska stelde zich ten doel om Roermond ook voor de toekomst de stad van de glasschilderkunst te maken. Daarom werden er contacten gelegd met moderne glaskunstenaars om de traditie van de glaskunst te promoten en voort te zetten. Zij bood de kunstenaars een podium door in het eigen atelier een vaste ruimte voor de glaskunst in te richten. Om nog meer mensen van de schoonheid van glazen ramen en voorwerpen te laten genieten en hun te laten zien hoe mooi licht met glas kan spelen, zocht Mariska tevens naar een grotere ruimte in de stad. De kruisgangen van het voormalig Kartuizerklooster in de Swalmerstraat leken haar uitermate geschikt voor deze grotere opzet en dankzij demedewerking van het bisdom Roermond werd zij de initiator voor de glastentoonstellingen die vanaf die tijd elke 2 jaar door haar georganiseerd worden op deze locatie. Dit jaar vindt de 10e Biënnale plaats, die extra groots van opzet zal zijn. Joep Nicolas staat momenteel centraal in het Cuypershuis van Roermond. Het thema “In de voetsporen van Joep Nicolas” sluit daarbij aan. In de sfeervolle Kruisgangen van het voormalig Kartuizerklooster in het centrum van Roermond kunnen liefhebbers van glaskunst genieten van deze buitengewone en veelzijdige glaskunsttentoonstelling met werken van internationale glaskunstenaars. Waar vroeger de Kartuizers brevierden, staan nu de glassculpturen in het serene daglicht opgesteld. In één van de meer dan 60 meter lange kruisgangen is een expositie ingericht over derecente glasvondst op nog geen 300 mtr. vanaf het voormalig atelier Nicolas. Het betreft glasfragmenten van gekleurd en gebrandschilderd glas uit de periode van circa 1300 – 1850. Kort geleden werden ruim 2000 fragmenten gevonden bij de renovatie van de singels. Samen met de glasvondst uit 2009 die 1,5 miljoen fragmenten betrof, is dit de grootste glasvondst in Europa. Mariska is verheugd dat zij diverse fragmenten uit deze opgravingen mag tonen in de historische overzichtstentoonstelling. De heer Jente van den Bosch, Directeur SOB research / Instituut voor Archeologisch en aardkundig onderzoek, zal de expositie in de Kruisgangen op zaterdag 30 augustus om 14.00 uur openen en hij zal daarbij zeker ingaan op het grote nationale en internationale belang van deze vondst in onze stad. Elke zaterdag en zondag van 30 augustus t/m 12 oktober van 13.00 tot 17.00 uurzijn de Kruisgangen aan de Swalmerstraat 100 te Roermond open voor bezoekers. De ingang ligt achter de poort, rechts naast de Caroluskapel. De entree is gratis. In het Atelier Mariska Dirkx, het voormalig atelier van Joep Nicolas,  Wilhelminasingel 67 Roermond is tevens een historische expositie ingericht over de geschiedenis van het atelier dat in 1855 werd opgericht. Daarbij wordt teruggekeken op het werk van alle leden van de bekende familie Nicolas en de betekenis van de glaskunst in onze stad in het algemeen. Frans Nicolas en zonen, Joep Nicolas, Suzanne Nys, Gisèle van Waterschoot van der Gracht en Charles Eyck werkten hier. Speciaal voor deze expositie wordt een mooi glasraam van Joep Nicolas over het leven van Schinderhannes getoond en natuurlijk zijn er voorbeelden van hedendaagse glaskunst te zien van 30 augustus t/m 12 oktober. Open: elke zaterdag en zondag van tussen 13 en 17 uur en op overige dagen volgens afspraak. De entree is ook hier gratis. Met dank aan: het Bisdom Roermond voor het beschikbaar stellen van de Kruisgangen en alle vrijwilligers die deze exposities mede mogelijk maken.

Glaswandelingen met een stadsgids kunnen vanuit het voormalig atelier Nicolas georganiseerd worden naar de Kruisgang en eventueel naar de Kathedraal waar moderne glasramen te bekijken zijn. Alle locaties liggen op nog geen 10 minuten loopafstand van elkaar. In het weekend is de aangrenzende Caroluskapel bij de kruisgang, daterend uit 1398, vanaf 14 uur geopend en vrij toegankelijk. Fotowedstrijd “Fragmenten van glas”Geïnspireerd door de schat aan gevonden glasfragmenten is de opdracht van de fotowedstrijd: fotografeer een fragment van een glasobject. Ook nu kiest het publiek dat de tentoonstellingen bezoekt de winnaar. De prijs voor de winnaar en zijn/haar familie: een rondleiding en glaswandeling door een deskundige gids langs de tentoonstellingen in de kruisgangen en het voormalig atelier van Joep Nicolas en naar de kathedraal met zijn mooie vensters Het Cuypershuis te Roermondorganiseert in dezelfde periode een grote tentoonstelling over de beroemde schilder / glazenier Joep Nicolas.www.cuypershuisroermond.nl

In the footsteps of Joep Nicolas

for many years  Mariska Dirkx has been working on the cultural heritage of glass art in Roermond.

Thirty years ago, almost nobody knew what an important role the glass artists of the city of Roermond played at home and abroad. Mariska Dirkx and Dick van Wijk, who live in the former studio of the Nicolas family since 1979 and work every day surrounded by the rich past. Since they live there, there have been visitors talking about Joep Nicolas. For over 150 years, the workshop is a meeting place where artists find each other and the public. For 35 years Dick van Wijk, sculptor, works in the studio and Mariska Dirkx organizes from her gallery exhibitions and is the determining factor for the contemporary glass artists.
It turned out that Joep Nicolas has a great reputation and had many personal contacts. They had and have great respect for him. It is not for nothing that Princess Beatrix was ready to open on June 10 jl exhibition at the Cuypershuis 

Mariska and Dick found it very unfortunate that threatened to lose the cultural heritage of the stained glass as a result of the growing secularization and especially Mariska took in 1986 the initiative to initiate the first Joep Nicolas foundation. She started to explore the history of the glass artists of Roermond. The Nicolas family played the lead role and with the years Mariska gathered more data on the track of the family itself and its artworks.
Mariska set herself the goal to promote the future of Roermond, the city of Glass painting Therefore, contacts were made with contemporary glass artists to promote the tradition of glass art and continue from there. They offered the artists a stage in our own workshop by a permanent space for the glass art in focus.
To allow more people to enjoy the beauty of glass windows and objects and to show how beautiful light with glass can play, Mariska also looked for a larger space in the city. The cloisters of the former Carthusian monastery in Swalmerstraat seemed perfect for this larger structure and thanks to the cooperation of the diocese of Roermond she was the initiator of the glass exhibitions since that time every two years and organized by it in this location.
This year, the 10th Biennial takes place, on an extra grand scale . Joep Nicolas is currently presented at the Cuypershuis of Roermond. The theme "In the footsteps of Joep Nicolas" in keeping with this expo. In the atmospheric cloisters of the former Carthusian monastery in the center of Roermond, glass art lovers can enjoy this extraordinary and versatile glass art exhibition of works by international glass artists. Where previously roamed the Carthusians, the glass sculptures are now presented in the serene light.
In one of the more than 60 meters long cloisters is an exhibition about the recent discovery of ancient glass, found at less than 300 meters from the former studio Nicolas. These fragments of colored glass and stained glass dating from about 1300 -. 1850, more than 2000 fragments were found during
 the renovation of the streets.
Together with the discovery of glass in 2009 (which consisted of 1.5 million pieces), this is the largest glass treasure found in Europe. Mariska is pleased that various fragments from the excavations are shown in the historical retrospective. 

Mr. Jente van den Bosch, Director SOB Research / Institute for Archaeological and geological research, the exhibition at the Kruisgang monastery on Saturday, August 30th at 14:00 will open and he will thereby certainly address the major national and international importance of this finding in our city​​. 

Every Saturday and Sunday from 30 August / 12 October from 13.00 to 17.00, the Cross Walks to Swalmerstraat 100 Roermond open to visitors. The entrance is behind the gate, right next to the Charles Chapel. Admission is free. 

In the Atelier Mariska Dirkx, the former studio of Joep Nicolas, Wilhelminasingel 67 Roermond is also a historical exhibition about the history of the studio that was founded in 1855. Glass Guided city tours can be organized from the former studio Nicolas to the Cloister and possibly to the Cathedral where modern glass windows to view. All venues are within 10 minutes walking distance from each other. At the weekend the adjacent Charles Chapel in the cloister, dating from 1398, opens at 14 am and freely accessible.
